CAMP REPORTS 2004

A report on RMBO On the Wing Camp

26 June-7 July 2004

By Kelsey S. Moreng

I am writing you in regards to the "On the Wing" summer camp that I attended thanks to your generous scholarship that made it possible. I enjoyed this camp very much and I was able to use my knowledge from after the camp, identifying birds on a family rafting trip I recently took.

During camp, we visited the fourteen different habitat zones. We each had one of the fourteen zones to do a little report on for the camp's ending presentation. Mine, being wetlands, was a very unique zone. The camp visited the Monte Vista Wildlife Refuge and the Rio Grand State Wildlife Area to research wetlands. Some of the birds we identified around the areas were; Great Blue Herons, White Egrets, Great Egrets, Redheads, Mallards, many types of Teals, and we even ran into a nest of baby Mourning Doves.

One of the highlights of camp for me was visiting the Chico Basin Ranch. While birding in the area, we also took a tour and learned about the ways of ranching. We saw how ranchers tend to their cattle and horses.

The thing that I most enjoyed about camp was just the fact that I was able to spend time with other young birders. I met many new people from far and near and was surprised to find out how much all birders have in common. Being at this camp has made an impression on me that I hope I will never forget. I made many new friends and increased my knowledge of not only birds but also the everyday life of a rancher. I hope to continue birding for years to come. Going to camp was only possible because of you. I really appreciate the scholarship. Thank you.
