OFFSHORE MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA Departure Point: Chris's Fishing Shop, Fisherman's Wharf, Monterey, CA Destination: Albacore fishing grounds, Sur Canyon, or Cabrillo Canyon; about 30-50 miles offshore. Comments: This remains the single best trip for Xantus's and Craveri's Murrelets and Blue Whales; also excellent for jaegers, with more than 200 sometimes recorded. Good choice for birders with only one day to do a pelagic trip. In addition the area south of Pt. Pinos, we head north to where storm-petrels are more likely. FARALLON ISLANDS, CALIFORNIA Departure Point: Caruso's Harbor, Sausalito, CA. Destination: Farallon seabird colony and edge of Continental Shelf (seas permitting), 26-35 miles offshore. 2-3 leaders per trip. Trip length: 8 hours. Trip organizer: Debra Love Shearwater, Shearwater Journeys. Date of 2006 trip: Aug. 6. Comments: This is the best chance to see Tufted Puffin, which nests on the islands. Most of the truly pelagic species (albatross and shearwaters) are not likely unless weather permits the boat to go to the edge of the shelf. Landing not permitted on the islands. BODEGA BAY, CALIFORNIA Departure Point: Port O'Bodega, Bodega Bay, CA. Destination: Bodega Canyon, Cordell Bank, and beyond to the 1700- or 2000-fathom line. 25-45 miles offshore. Comments: This is a great area for rare birds; best season for southern hemisphere rarities is June through August. Records include Streaked Shearwater; "Shy" (Salvin's), Short-tailed, Light-mantled Sooty Albatrosses; Murphy's, Great-winged, Hawaiian/Galápagos ("Dark-rumped"), Parkinson's Petrels. Parakeet and Least Auklets very rare but possible. FORT BRAGG, CALIFORNIA Departure Point: Fort Bragg, CA Destination: Noyo Canyon, Vizcaino Knoll, 20-30+ miles offshore. Trip length: 8-12 hours.
