American Birding Association is the organization of North
American birders, and its mission is to inspire all people to enjoy and
protect wild birds.
Your ABA membership brings a number of benefits, including a variety
of both informal and technical publications, participation in ABA
conferences and conventions, purchase of books and gear from ABA Sales,
numerous travel-related benefits, participation in ABA sponsored tours,
and the opportunity to 'give something back' by getting involved in a
number of exciting and worthwhile conservation and education programs.
Publications
- Membership entitles you to six consecutive issues of Birding,
ABA's bimonthly, award-winning full-color journal featuring articles
about birdfinding, tours, identification, conservation, and more;
and Winging
It, ABA's newsletter, with the latest birding
news, rare species page, events, and classified ads.
- The ABA Big Day Report and List
Report is a voluntary compilation of birding achievements
and members' life lists. A number of our members make attempts to
set annual listing records, and this report lists them all.
- A
Bird's-Eye View is a the bimonthly ABA youth newsletter
written by and for young members. Discover new tips on bird
identification. Share secrets about how to develop good notebook
and drawing techniques. Receive hot news and information for and
from young birders.
- The ABA/Lane
Birdfinding Guide Series is considered to be the best of
this kind of site guide with clear, accurate directions to birding
sites, excellent maps, seasonal occurrence/relative abundance
bar-graphs, and a specialties section.
- A complete and up-to-date listing of US and Canada Rare
Bird Alert phone numbers is published periodically in Winging
It and on the website.
ABA Conferences and Conventions, Workshops, Tours
- ABA's Annual Conventions and Regional Conferences are sterling opportunities to make new birding friends, sharpen your birding skills through workshops and field trips, and have fun with people whose interests match your own.
- ABA's Institute for Field Ornithology workshops are designed to help ABA members improve field skills, with an emphasis on field identification, and the natural history and conservation of birds. Timing and location of workshops are selected for optimal field learning experience.
- ABA-endorsed Tours are special birding tours endorsed by ABA and conducted by selected and approved tour operators. They are listed in Winging It and Birding as well as on this website.
ABA Sales
- ABA Sales is the largest mail-order business of its kind in the country. After years of working with birders in the field we have a first-hand appreciation of which scopes, binoculars, books and other birding equipment you need. ABA Sales is open weekdays from 9:00am to 5:00pm (ET).
- Issued in spring and fall, The Birders' Catalog features a wide range of field guides, site guides, bird family studies, optics, tripods, birdsong recordings, videos, and other birding accessories.
