2004 IFO Hummingbirds Workshop Report

Instructors: Sheri L. Williamson and Tom Wood . July 25 - August 1, 2004 . SE Arizona

The second IFO Hummingbirds Workshop was held in Bisbee, Arizona July 25 to August 1, 2004.

The workshop actually started in Tucson with a visit to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, a great introduction to the wildlife and habitats of the region. In the hummingbird aviary, we were able to get our first look at several of the species we would see later in the week and study them up close. Costa's Hummingbirds on the grounds of the museum provided our only look at this desert dweller.

Classroom sessions at the Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory's Banning Creek Field Station covered the biology, ecology, behavior, and identification of these complex and charismatic birds. The field station also offered good birding. Violet-crowned Hummingbirds were among many visitors to the feeding station, and one afternoon the group spotted two immature Peregrine Falcons playing on the wind above the nearby cliffs.

Our first full day in the field produced 11 species of hummingbirds, including White-eared, Blue-throated, Magnificent, and Allen's at Beatty's Guest Ranch, and two beautiful male Lucifer Hummingbirds at dusk at Ash Canyon Bed & Breakfast. Over the next four days, visits to Patagonia, Garden Canyon, and the Chiricahuas produced more hummingbirds and an assortment of other Arizona specialties such as Buff-breasted Flycatcher, Mexican Chickadee, Thick-billed and Tropical kingbirds and an astounding FIVE Elegant Trogons in Garden Canyon. As always, the wildflowers, butterflies, and splendid scenery competed with the birds for our attention. On the way to the airport, we wrapped up a fine week of birding with a stop at an urban colony of Burrowing Owls in Tucson.
