BIRDERS' EXCHANGE RECIPIENTS
Letter from a Recipient

On 13 March 2000 I was graciously granted a pair of Bausch&Lomb 10x42 Elite binoculars from the Birder's Exchange Program. They immediately replaced the old, low quality, and worn-out binoculars I had been using. I am amazed on how much I was missing. So far, these binoculars have been a fundamental equipment on two cruises. In early April I spent two weeks recording seabirds in the central Gulf of California. The data gathered will help assemble a current picture of several of the species that nest in that area. Also, in June I participated in a week-long binational expedition to Isla Guadalupe, off the Pacific coast of Baja California. Here I was part of the seabirds team, along with Robert Pittman and William Everett. Our main objective was to search for the Guadalupe Storm-petrel, a species considered to be extinct, but for which no specific searches had been carried out recently. Unfortunately our observations support the suspicion of this species being extinct. We made observations on all other seabirds observed. Other field research that I had planned for this year, and in which the binoculars would have been the most important equipment, had to be cancelled because of budgetary restrictions. However, I will soon resume field activity, and, in such doing, my "new" binoculars will play a fundamental role.
